Ralph Carter Sr. was born July 26, 1930 in Marlin, TX, the only child of Ruth and Ross Carter who preceded him in death. He departed this life on January 18, 2014 after suffering with Multiple System Atrophy (MSA) and Parkinson’s. He was raised by his Aunt and Uncle who moved him with them to California. He was educated in the public schools of Marysville, CA. As a child growing up in Northern California, he worked during the summers on various farms. He married his first wife and two children were born during this marriage – Catherine and Ralph. He later moved to Los Angeles, CA where he met and married Mamie L. Holland of Portland, OR. They were married 61 years. He relocated with her to Portland where they resided until his death.
Ralph accepted Christ as his Lord and Savior under Pastor James E. Martin of Mt. Olivet Baptist Church. He loved music and always wanted to play an instrument. Upon retiring at age 62 he enrolled in the Professional Music Program at PCC and also took private saxophone lessons.
He loved fishing and camping. He was a member of Sam’s Charioteers Motor Home Club which was comprised of families who enjoyed camping and fishing with each other for years. Ralph also was a member of The Romeo Club (Retired Old Men Eating Out). He loved meeting his retired friends every Friday for breakfast. Bowling was another love of his and he enjoyed this activity with his friends for years. He was also a member of Billy Webb Elks Lodge #1050.
He leaves to cherish his memory his beloved wife Mamie, children Catherine A. White, Ralph Carter Jr., and Candy Samman. Grandchildren Tracey Patterson, Kandy Raiford, Marcus Raiford, Camille Evans, brother in law Joseph P. Holland of Hampton, VA, sister in law Ann Holland of Ashburn, VA, several great grandchildren, one great - great grandson, several nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends.
