Albert (Bert) Neal Hanson, Sr. passed away on July 20th, 2019, at the age of 81.
He was born January 7th, 1938 to Mary and Neal Hanson.
He is survived by his sister Marcia Owens, his dearest wife Sherry Hanson and
their four children, Kirsten Locke, Bert Hanson, Jr., Marlis Sears, and Lewis
Hanson. Also surviving is a legacy of eight grandchildren along with a host of
nieces, nephews, cousins, and many, many friends.
Raised in Pendleton, he joined the Army after graduating high school. Once his
three-year stint was done he went to Portland State College where he earned a
bachelor s degree in Chemistry, plus the beautiful bonus of meeting his future
wife.
After graduating he went to work at OHSU working in a lab that specialized in
basic research on connective tissue. He held that position for 27 years. He
often rode his bicycle to work from Beaverton.
Meanwhile, he collected foreign stamps, joined the Beaver stamp club, and made
friends. One friend in particular led Bert to a resurgence of faith in God at
the Aloha Methodist Church. From attending services, then acting as an usher, to
joining the choir and finally feeling the call to become a minister, he grew as
a person. He was already a devoted husband and father. Now with the support of
his dear wife he embarked on a new passion. To become father to the several
different flocks where he would be stationed. He also volunteered with hospice,
acted as a camp counselor, and became involved with other activities both within
and beyond his ministry.
He made many friends with his compassionate, patient, gentle demeanor. And
despite the major stroke twelve years ago that stole much of his vocabulary and
memories, he retained all the sweet, wonderful qualities everyone loved about
him. He will be dearly missed.
The family ask that in his honor donations can be made to your favorite charity.
His memorial service will be held August 3rd at 3pm at the Aloha United
Methodist church. 2270 SW 198th Ave. Aloha Oregon.
