Art Johnson passed away on April 8, 2011, three days before his 94th birthday.
Art's mother and father Emigrated from Sweden. His dad worked for two years in North Dakota and saved enough money to help purchase 68 acres for $500 in Kalama, Washington. This land was used for a family dairy farm. Art was born on the farm and learned to milk cows by age 7. Like many children of immigrants, he spoke their native Swedish at home and English in school. He continued to help on the farm with his 2 sisters and 3 brothers until he graduated from Kalama High School in 1935. After high school, Art learned to drive truck and worked for 7 years for his brother, Henry, who owned a trucking company.
Art decided to travel down another career path and enrolled in Western States College of Chiropractic. He graduated in 1951.
In 1950 Art was at a dance where he met Lillie. The dancing led to dating and dating to marriage. In 1953 Art and Lillie tied the knot. Lillie's daughter Linda and son Bruce created an instant family. A few years later, the family was enlarged when Linnea was born.
Art maintained his clinic in NW Portland for 28 years. He received many honors during his years of practice including 1966 Oregon Chiropractor of the Year.
Art and Lillie were active in the YMCA Couples Club and loved to square dance and play golf. After retiring, they moved to Summerfield in Tigard with a home conveniently on the golf course. It was on this course Art scored a Hole in One!
They enjoyed many years at their vacation spots at Devil's Lake, Puamana on Maui, and Desert Hot Springs. Dancing, being with friends and family, golf and boating were highlights.
Art always had a joke or story he loved to share. He was also known for singing one of his favorite songs, "Father was a Widower."
