Barbara was born February 17, 1927 in Portland, Oregon to Adolf and Amelia Rose Schulz. At age two, the family moved to Oregon City. When she was 14 her family returned to Portland where she attended Grant High School.
Barbara was gifted with a beautiful singing voice. She regularly performed with the Duncan Singers Quartet on KOIN Radio.
Barbara met Charles Tomassene at Lewis and Clark College and on May 8, 1945 they were married in Portland. In 1952, their first child Paul was born. Then came daughter Elise in 1953, Donna in 1955 and finally Charles III in 1956. They moved to NE Sacramento where they lived for 60 years and raised an assortment of animals.
Barbara was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother. She loved to cook. Apple pie was her specialty. She was a long-time member of Rose City Park Presbyterian Church where she sang in the choir and performed solos for weddings and other occasions.
She enjoyed water and snow skiing, raising money for Friends of Timberline Lodge and volunteering at Albertina Kerr Center in Portland. She was a member of PEO National Women’s Organization where she served as President for three terms.
Barbara passed peacefully on Saturday, September 29, 2018. She is survived by husband of 73 years, four children, their spouses and seven grandchildren.
Services will be held at Rose City Cemetery and Funeral Home, 5625 NE Fremont, Portland, Oregon on Saturday, October 6, at 11:00 AM.
In Lieu of flowers, a donation to the American Heart Association or PEO Sisterhood Veritable Trust, c/o Margaret Bown, Chapter AH, would be appreciated.
