On April 29, 2012 Betty Jean Cohen's long struggle with illness came to an end. Born on May 16, 1933 in Paris, Texas she was preceded in death by her beloved parents, James M. Cohen and Erma R. Cohen, and two of her four sons, Michael James Howard and John Anthony Howard. The family takes comfort in knowing Betty was welcomed home by so many loved ones. Betty is survived by her sons, Jerold Marcus Howard and William David Stitt Jr. to whom she left great courage and strength.
Her marriage to Johnie Howard resulted in her first three sons, Michael, John and Jerold and her marriage to William Stitt Sr. produced her fourth son, William.
Betty loved gospel music, her children and her large extended family. She took great pride in mentoring young people. In her career as a social worker for Multnomah County and as an emergency room nurse, at Emanuel Hospital, Betty loved helping families in need. As an active member of Emanuel Free Methodist Church and, later, Life Change Christian Center Sister Betty truly loved her church family. No one who ever knew her will ever forget her quick wit and indomitable spirit. She will be missed.
