B. Gail King

March 9, 1943 — February 21, 2007

Gail Strouts was born in Portland March 9, 1943. She attended Grout Elementary School and Cleveland High School. She married Tim King in 1964. Their four daughters were raised in the Irvington neighborhood and attended Madeleine Grade School.
A vibrant and funny woman, well known for her many good works throughout Portland, Gail loved traveling through the United States and around the world with Tim and her daughters. But her favorite place was at home with her husband and their grandchildren, Timothy and Emily.
Gail worked for Pacific Power until cancer forced her to take disability leave in 2005. Her family feared that she would succumb to it all too quickly. Gail decided otherwise. She chose to live and grow more in love with her family and friends. For two years, childhood friends, neighbors, co-workers, fellow parishioners, and some of her 150 relatives came through her front door. Most were kind enough to bring their children. She fed on the love and the compassion of friends. In return she gave good humor and examples of courage and dignity. In the face of an evil and invasive disease she chose to live and love. Gail might have quit but didn't know how. She had insurance to pay for full-time caregivers but it never felt right. Her daughters, Katy, Judy, Sally, and Jane, along with Sally's husband, Matt Padrow, took time off work to be with Gail each week. Gail's sister, Judy Garrett, helped every week and her mother-in-law, Geraldine King, offered constant support. The family is thankful for the opportunity to care for their mother, wife, sister, aunt, daughter-in-law, and grandmother. We all grew more in love with Gail and with each other.
She died peacefully at home, surrounded by her family, on Feb. 21, 2007.
We would like to thank our many friends for the cards, prayers, visits, love, and caring. Your gifts were profound and will be with us forever. We also would like to thank the Hospice Care Staff of Kaiser for knowing their job so well and doing it with love. Gail's illness could have been a disaster but, surprisingly, it turned out to be a gift of spirit from Gail to us. Gail lived a beautiful life to the end.
