Bobbie Jean Flake was born to the union of Angeline Foster-Smith and Johnny B, Smith on May 29, 1941, in Grand Cane, Louisiana.
She was raised in church and continued as an adult serving at St. Augustine Church, in Shreveport, Louisiana. In 1969, she relocated to Portland, Oregon immediately found a church home under the leadership of Dr. Robert C. Hill, Pastor of Paradise Missionary Baptist Church. Bobbie served on the Pastoral Committee. She later met and married Jonathan D. Flake, where he became a deacon and she became a deaconess. They both continued working in the church faithfully.
Bobbie was employed with Greyhound Bus Lines for years until she was forced to retire because of medical reasons. She then became a Foster Care Provider for children. This seemed to be her calling, as Bobbie truly loved children. Whenever you saw Bobbie, she was always surrounded by children. Bobbie had the personality that she never met a stranger, out of compassion; Bobbie was always willing to help.
Jonathan and Bobbie came to Morning Star Baptist Church in the year of 2000 where they immediately started working in the church, he was appointed deacon and Bobbie as a deaconess by Pastor Johnson, Bobbie also was a member of the Mass Choir, also she worked with the children's choir, she was also appointed kitchen aid where she remained until her health would not permit her to continue. In 2006 Bobbie was diagnosed with Lung Cancer, Bobbie continued to fellowship with the church until her health would not allow her to continue. However her position in Christ kept her smiling right up until the end. Bobbie departed this life May 13th, 2008 to be with the Lord.
Preceding her in death was her father Johnny B, Smith, and two brothers Artis and Johnny Jr.
She leaves to mourn her departure her loving husband Deacon Jonathan D, Flake, her mother Angeline Foster-Smith, of Louisiana her son Elijah Simms, Jr. of Portland, Oregon and two daughters, Laura Mae Simms, of Portland, Oregon and Annie Faye Hall, of Houston, Texas, and Tony and Brandon Flake of Portland, Oregon. Eight grandchildren, five great grandchildren, eight stepchildren, five brothers, Charles, Ray, Edward, Jim and Eddy Smith , five sisters Aida V., Ruby, Josephine, Margie and Lucy Smith all of Louisiana 1 sister-in-law Kay Burrell of Portland, Oregon. A host of nieces and nephews and many, many, many friends. Bobbie, will greatly be missed.
