Burnett Everett Austin, Sr., was born February 26, 1922, in Bryan, Texas. His parents were Hettie and Edward Austin. He transitioned to eternity on February 23, 2013.
Burnett was a strong man who was motivated and very independent.
Burnett attended schools in Bryan, Texas. Then Burnett met Celestine Marie Gause, the love of his life. They married on April 5, 1942. Their union lasted 53 years. The couple moved to Portland in 1943.
Burnett was employed by the Union Pacific Railroad for 37 years, both in the Fireman, Oilers and Dining Car Divisions. He was also secretary-treasurer of Local 465, and President of Local 958. Burnett was committed to various community services: The Selective Service Board, Consumer Advisory Council, and The Portland Model Cities Program.
Burnett enjoyed playing Bridge, for which he won many trophies, and Golf, and was an avid Portland Trailblazers fan. He loved to debate and discuss most anything including Sports, Politics, and History. He was also a member of the Royal Esquires, and a member of Grant High School Dad's Club.
As we embrace his memories, remember the laughter and smiles we all shared together. Let us celebrate his new life and journey home.
He was preceded in death by: his wife: Celestine Marie; a daughter: Barbara White; and four brothers. He leaves to mourn: his sister: Sallye Hallum of Dallas, Texas; his sons: Burnett E. Austin, Jr. of New York, New York, Wesley C. Austin of Portland, Oregon; daughters: Anita M. (Floyd) Glenn of San Francisco, California. Janice A. (John) Livingston of Peekskill, New York, Winona Faye Austin of Portland, Oregon; six Grandsons and two Great Grandchildren.
