Charlie Ford was born December 29, 1929 to Charlie Sr.and Erma Ford in Hickory, Mississippi. He was the third of seven siblings. He attended grade and high school in Hickory and continued his education at Rust College in Mississippi.
Charlie traveled nationally as a young man with his church's musical group. He was very invovled in his church and in the choir. He was a devoted member to Bethel AME Church in Northeast Portland.
Charlie moved to Portland and married Eshter Backstrom. They raised six children: two Daughters, Myrtle Ford and Dena Ford-Avery and four sons, Ronald, Delvin, Christoper and Craig Ford. They enjoyed over 50 years of marriage until Esther passed away in 2003.
Charlie was well known in Northeast Portland as a community builder and activist in fighting racism. He was very involved in his community and was honored in the city's annual Spirit Awards. Many people knew Charlie and respected his opinions and his vigor. He was dedicated to his family, his city and was known for his fairness and integrity.
Charlie is preceded in death by his parents, siblings and wife Esther. He leaves behind to lovingly carry on his work his six children, seven grandchildren and one great grandchild.
No words can express the loss to the community and the impact Charlie's life has made upon us all. May we continue to keep his spirit alive by carrying on his good work and continue to work together to build our community with love and respect. Thank you Charlie for your service, it will continue to lead us to a better world.
