Dan Surina passed away unexpectedly May 30, 2012 at his home in Portland. Dan was born April 28, 1966 in Tacoma to Robert and Ann Surina. He graduated from Madison High School in 1984 and was a proud member of the Madison Baseball Program. He received his bachelor's degree from Portland State in 1989. Dan had a special gift for helping others and made a career of it, beginning with elderly crimes and ending with child welfare services. He had a love of athletics, especially baseball and football. Dan spent many years teaching the game of baseball through Rose City Little League and Madison Babe Ruth. His "zebra vision" allowed him to referee Portland-area football for almost 20 years. Dan also had a passion for gardening and was an OSU Master Gardener. Dan was full of wit, humor, intelligence and liberal views and loved to share them through his "uncley knowledge" to his nieces and nephews. Dan is survived by his mother, Ann Surina; brothers, Rob, Blake (Carla), and Mike (Amy); sisters, Betsy and Suzann Grose (Marshall); nieces and nephews, Mary, Stephen, Trey, Victoria "Sis," Madilyn "Madhatter," Ashton "Auggie," Hayley "Meat," Gracie "Gravy" and Cy; best friend and cousin, Dan Troglin. Dan was preceded in death by his father, Robert Surina. A memorial service will be held 1 p.m. Wednesday, June 6, 2012 at Faithful Savior Lutheran Church, 11100 NE Skidmore St., Portland, OR 97220.
