David Rodriguez Loera
May 30, 1941-August 9, 2013
David Loera died on August 9, 2013 in Portland, OR at the age of 72. He was one of ten children born to Manuel Loera and Porfiria Rodriguez. David is survived by longtime companera: Luz Villarroel, Friends: Owen Dailey, Estella and Alberto Music Partners, and many other friends; siblings, Isabel Loera, Manuel Loera, Martha Guider, Mary Dillon, Estella Loera and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by both of his parents, as well as his siblings Enriqueta Allen, Francisco Loera, Carmen Whitaker, and Joe Loera. David was born on May 30, 1941 in Real De Catorce, Mexico and was raised in Texas and Oregon. He attended school in Nyssa, OR.
Graduated from Nyssa High School in 1962. He attended Treasure Valley Community College, Portland State University, and Mt. Angel College where he received his B.A. in Behavioral Science. He also attended Oregon State University and received his Masters in Education, Guidance and Counseling. He received numerous certificates of training in Bilingual Education, Chicano Studies, Social, Cultural and Multicultural Training, Drug and Alcohol Counseling, Literacy and Vocational and Academic Guidance and Counseling.
As a child and youth he worked as a migrant farm worker and dedicated his early years (1966-1991) to the United Farm Workers lead by Cesar Chavez in organizing the United Farm Workers and was one of the original founders of Pineros Y Campecinos and CAUSA. He also organized one of the first Chicano Plays, "Bernabe," and promoted the arts through acting and music.
In the last Fifty years David dedicated his life to serving, guiding, advocating, organizing and teaching at numerous agencies, organizations, institutions: Valley Migrant League, Oregon Rural Opportunities, Marion County Migrant Education, Labor and Industry, Liquor Control, Salud de la Familia and Virginia Health Clinics, Woodburn, Salem, Beaverton school districts. He taught Chicano Studies at PCC and PSU and English for non-native speakers. Organized Literacy Programs for new immigrants of Spanish speaking through the Plaza Comunitaria for the Mexican Consulate in Beaverton and Woodburn School Districts. David Also received numerous recognition, awards and scholarships for his commitment and dedication to our Migrant, Farm Workers, multilingual and multicultural populations.
He was a very active member of the Democratic Party. Served on several committees and represented the party locally and nationally. He ran for Senator in 2008 for the Democratic Party in Oregon. TWO of his missions in the last thirty years was to pass two bills for: FAIR "UNIVERSAL HEALTH CARE FOR ALL and an IMIGRATION REFORM'. He was a true friend of the less fortunate, the powerless and the voiceless, yet, a very quiet, caring and thoughtful Soul, But very Witty, Funny and Brilliant "May his legacy and dreams live forever"
