Dolores Lee Clifton

February 28, 1920 — February 8, 2008

Dolores Clifton was born on February 28, 1920 in Rainier Oregon to Raymond E. Lee and Bessie Lucile Pruden, just missing being a leap-year baby by a few hours. She died February 8, 2008 at 87. After high school Dolores moved to Portland, finding work at Montgomery Ward. It was in Portland that she met and later married Haakon Norman Clifton on Flag Day, June 14th 1940. Dolores and Norman had two children, Bruce and Nancy. In the mid 1960's Dolores was diagnosed with cancer and later became a breast cancer survivor. In 1965, an empty nester, Dolores started working at the Multnomah County Law Library and was assistant librarian when she retired in 1990 after 25 years, a career which suited her attention to detail.

Dolores and her husband Norman were very active in the Portland Sons of Norway and its Norwegian Male Chorus for many years. "Dolly" as she was known, adopted the Norwegian traditions of her husband and enjoyed preparing Scandinavian classic dishes and desserts, but Norman died unexpectedly in 1979. Then, in 1984, Dolores married Jacob K. Clifton, a 4th cousin of Norman, and a friend from the late 1930's. They sold their big houses and purchased a home in Summerplace, and soon became involved with dinner parties, dancing, the symphony, bridge groups and travel. They were happy and active until 1999 when Jacob fell, broke his hip, and went to the Friendship Health Care Center to recover. Dolores visited Jake every day, bringing fresh vegetables, playing cribbage and helping any way she could until Jake died in May 2006.

Dolores is survived by her sister Marian Curtis, her son Bruce Clifton of Seattle; daughter Nancy Clifton Jones of Portland; her stepchildren, Janie Killermann of Del Mar, California, Marni Reinmuth of Eugene, Jay Clifton of Eugene, and several nieces, nephews and grandchildren.

A memorial service and reception to honor the life of Dolores Clifton will be held on Tuesday, February 26, 2008 at 1:30pm at Rivercrest Community Church, 3201 NE 148th. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Grieg Lodge #15, Sons of Norway, at 111 NE 11th Ave, Portland, 97232, or the Friendship Care Center at 3320 SE Holgate Blvd, 97202, or the American Cancer Society; these are all non profit organizations that touched her life.
