Duane Albert Bartsch was born May 23, 1927, in rural Cresbard, South Dakota . He was baptized as an infant and confirmed in Lutheran Church. He attended schools in Cresbard until age 17 when he moved westward and joined the Navy. He served the military during World War II. He was a graduate of Willamette University. While working days he completed law school at Lewis & Clark, attending evening classes. He was an attorney for over 50 years and a member of the Oregon State Bar.
In Oregon he was a faithful member of Holy Cross Lutheran Church for 60 years. Duane also served the church-at-large as a member of the board of directors, Northwest District Lutheran Church Missouri Synod for 13 years, and was a founding member of the Concordia University Foundation, Portland, Oregon.
Duane was married to Elaine for over 61 years. They have three children: Rick, Debra, and Scott. Duane was preceded in death by their daughter Joan. They have six grandchildren: Tom, Craig, Luke, Annie, Kedric and Destiny. They also have three great-grandchildren: Cody, Layla, Natalie and two more on the way, together with numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. Among family he was known as a loving father, "Dad", Grandpa, Great-Grandpa, and "Unc" to the several nieces and nephews.
He enjoyed hunting in Alaska at Red's Cabin, clamming at Copalis Beach, fishing, duck hunting, playing pool, bowling, reading, doing crosswords and raising four children.
