Obituary of Elizabeth Tinker
Janey was born in Portland to Max Linton and Rose (Hamer) Smith, September 11, 1923 and died peacefully at home, August 19, 2013.
She was a substitute teacher in the Portland Public School System for five years and retired as a school librarian after 16 years in the same school. Her proudest accomplishment was her years amounting to 25, 500 hours of volunteer work at Adventist Medical Center in several service areas. As a volunteer she served in all the officer positions of the Oregon Association of Hospital Auxiliaries (OAHA). She retired from volunteering in 2010.
Janey was also an active member of "Widows of Gateway Elks" where she was Ways and Means chair, vice-president, social chair, and president. She was also an officer in the Oregon Defense Force, where she was the personnel officer for the battalion and attained the rank of Lt. Colonel. In September 1991, Janey received the Oregon National Guard Commendation Medal awarded for service "above and beyond" in the Oregon State Defense Force. She also served on the Oregon Scholastic Chess Foundation Board for ten years and served as chairperson and secretary.
She is survived by her daughter; Betsy Tinker of Portland, son; Robert Cain of Tucson, AZ, 5 Grandchildren, 2 great grandchildren, predeceased by sons; Daniel and David Private family gathering will be held at a later date. Rose City Funeral Home in charge of arrangements. 503-281-3821.
