Ethel B. Livingston was born April 13, 1915, and passed away on Friday April 11, 2008, just 2 days short of her 93 birthday. She was born in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Canada as a twin sister to Evelyn and to the proud parents David G and Ida B Shannon. She grew up ice skating, playing hockey and curling were her favorite pastimes during the long winters in Canada. Her father owned the grocery, drug store, gas station, and were the undertakers at the funeral home. Being twins in those days, was extremely rare, and were soon to only be known as ''the twins'' by friends and family. They left the Prairies of Canada at the age of 17 and traveled to the United States, where she could become a U S citizen as her parents were born in South Dakota & Iowa, and it was important to them she become an American Citizen
in 1922. They toured as far as Mexico and returned to Portland, Oregon where she began her career work at the Pendleton Woolen Mills. She also was housekeeper to the big homes in the West Hills, and carried that trait with her of meticulous cleaning and pride in herself till her parting. It was at that time she met Warner, who owned the variety and grocery store on Union Avenue, while she rented an apartment above the store. Six months later she married Warner F Livingston on November 18, 1944 and soon she went to work for the U S National Bank of Oregon.
She started a family with the birth of a baby girl, and did not know how to drive, so walked everywhere, enjoying the outdoors and the many people she could visit in the parks and neighborhood. She was a member of Mt Tabor Presbyterian Church and taught the 3 yr old Sunday school class for 8 years. The family moved to the new Gateway District in 1959 and they opened the first ''Supermarket'' in the Portland area on 111th & NE Halsey, Lew's Supermarket. She managed the bakery and also the first ''in store'' 15 cent hamburgers and 10 cent french fries Snack Bar----competing with McDonald's first store on NE 122nd. A terrific success!!! For many years she also was a food demonstrator throughout the Portland area. She created the first ''Silver Dollar'' anniversary cake for the store's celebration each year. Hundreds would come to see if they were the lucky one to win a silver dollar when she cut the cake. Warner retired in 1964 and she went to work for the Fred Meyer pharmacy and retired after 15 years of service.
They both enjoyed traveling to the Oregon Coast and to Hawaii many times during retirement. Warner predeceased her in 1991. She continued to enjoy visiting Hawaii with her daughter Bettyjean and son-in-law Manny. She was every bit a lady, loved her family and spent every day she could with her constant caregivers Bettyjean and Manny. She also enjoyed independent retirement living in what she liked to call ''luxury living'' @ Rock Creek and Normandy Retirement Communities, participating in their many activities and events. She especially enjoyed the Hawaiian music and the luaus and was always so pleased to have a fresh flower lei.
She is survived by her daughter BettyJean and son-in-law Manny K Fernandez of Aloha, Oregon. Daughter Georgena Jones of Meacham, Oregon. Also, twin sister Evelyn G Griguhn of Beaverton, Oregon. 7 grandchildren, 16 great grandchildren and 11 great great grandchildren. Her pride and joy were her 2 favorite Grandsons---MAUKA & MAKANA, the white Pekingese.
Entombment will be in Rose City Cemetery, Portland, Oregon. Remembrances to the American Heart Association.
