Fevrel Wayne Pratt

May 8, 1926 — February 22, 2013

Fevrel Wayne Pratt (Fev) passed away at his home, surrounded by the love of his family, on February 22, in Portland, Oregon. He was 86 years old.

Fev was born in Oakesdale, Washington, on May 8, 1926, to Francis Wayne Pratt and Marjorie Anderson (Warwick) Pratt, the eldest of three children. Fev worked hard as a youth on the family wheat farm in the Palouse region.

Fev's love for music defined much of his life. He attended Washington State University, receiving his Bachelor's Degree in Music Education. Fev then received his Master's Degree in Music from Louisiana State University. During graduate school at UCLA, Fev worked as a music proof reader at Disney Studios. He served his country during WWII playing the trumpet in the U.S. Army Band with Doc Severinsen.

Fev married the love of his life, Joan M. Wilson, in Clarkston, Washington, on March 31, 1951. They met at WSU where Joan was also studying music. They had four children – Fevrel, Debra, Kym, and Lori.

Fev started his high school music teaching career in Burlington, Washington (1952) followed by Spokane, Washington (1954). Fev and Joan moved their family to Portland in 1958 where he taught music (band, orchestra, and stage band) for the Portland Public School District (Roosevelt, Lincoln, and Madison High Schools) until he retired in 1983.

Fev served as past president for the Northwest Bandmasters Association, co-conductor of the Portland Metro Concert Band, member of the American Federation of Musicians, member and past president of Sigma Nu Fraternity at WSU, and choir director for over 50 years at United Methodist churches, including 32 years at the First United Methodist Church in Vancouver, Washington. Fev and Joan enjoyed serving as chaperones for America's Youth in Concert where they performed at exciting places like Carnegie Hall in New York, the United States Capitol in Washington, D.C., and in many European countries. Their travels also took them to China, Alaska, Canada, and many U.S. cities.

Fev served as music director for over 40 musicals performed at Civic Theater, St. Mary's Academy, summer youth programs, and local high schools. A Christmas highlight for seven years was performances of S.O.S. Save our Santa (by Fev Pratt and Lu Sheets), at Madison High School, by local students.
Favorite memories include watching Fev's high school bands march in the Portland Rose Festival Grand Floral Parade, Fev and (daughter) Lori playing in the One More Time Around Again Marching Band, Fev practicing his trumpet in the great outdoors, his quest for the perfect trumpet, Fev leading a professional band that performed at Portland Trail Blazers basketball games during the championship season (1977), his adventures in the U.S. Army Band, and Fev's dance band performing at Washington State University.

Fev is survived by his wife of 62 years, Joan, his children: Fevrel W. Pratt, Jr. (LeeAnn), Kym Pratt (Melissa), and Lori Pratt-Hughes (George); 6 grandchildren: Joelle (Colin), Jocelyn (Terrence), Bella, Trevor, Stephanie, and Christine; and 6 great grandchildren: Brendan, Aubree, Terrence, Olivia, Jaxon, and Evan; siblings: Merilyn Clizer and Stanley Pratt. Predeceased by daughter Debra Marie Pratt.
Fev was a wonderful, loving man who will be greatly missed by his family and friends. We think that God is probably using his talents with His choir of angels.

A Celebration of Life Service honoring Fev Pratt will be held on Saturday, March 9, 11:00 a.m., at First United Methodist Church, 401 E. 33rd St., Vancouver, Washington 98663.
