Frances E. Rosenthal

November 19, 1914 — September 19, 2009

Frances E. Rosenthal (Paddock) peacefully died September 19, 2009, two months shy of her 95th birthday. It's reasonable to determine that her death was from natural causes, but realistic to acknowledge the painful progression of Alzheimer's as her ultimate demise.

Born November 19, 1914, on her family's farm in what is now referred to as the Cully neighborhood (Paddock Acres, on the Portland real estate map), Frances lived the overwhelming majority of her life within a half-mile of her birthplace. That being said, she had the opportunity to travel the world with her loving husband of 68 years, John. She saw the landmarks of Europe, according to John, that she had researched and knew exactly which places she wanted to see.

Those were the golden years of her marriage with John, whom she wed February 14, 1941, followed by the birth of her twin "womb-mates" John and Virginia in 1943. Raising her family included Boy and Girl Scouts (both she and John were heavily involved in their troops), and countless hunter-gather trips to the mountain lakes and coast. Frances was an extraordinary homemaker. Her numerous interests included quilting, sewing, oil painting, crosswords, and gardening. She was a dedicated churchgoer and had baked and decorated cakes for weddings among the congregation of Calvary Church. Frances loved flowers and with John's willing labor, managed a garden that bloomed from the crocus of winter to the dahlia of autumn.

She was of the archetypal pioneer spirit: hardworking, tough, patient, forbearing, devout, and kind. She grew up knowing how to wear pants, hunt, and had the physical will to "tag along" with her Paddock cousins and summit Mt. Hood from Government Camp as a 16 year old.

She was a beloved wife, a providing and prodigious mother, a stalwart sister and sister-in-law, a respected aunt, and a cherished grandmother. She leaves behind her husband, John L. Rosenthal, son and daughter John H. Rosenthal and Virginia Henry, and two grandsons, Tye and Perry Van Schoiack.
