Gehzai Beyin, born on September 12, 1943, in the sun-kissed lands of Asmara, Eritrea, left this world on February 2, 2025, in his beloved Portland, Oregon. He passed away peacefully in his residence, leaving behind a tapestry of cherished memories that will forever resonate in the hearts of those who knew him.
Gehzai was a man whose smile could brighten the darkest of days, whose laughter was a melody to ears longing for joy. He was known throughout the town as the best-dressed gentleman, his fashion echoing his vibrant personality and kind heart. A garden enthusiast with a remarkable green thumb, anything he touched would turn to life, flourishing in a testament to his nurturing spirit. His ability to cultivate not only plants but also enduring relationships across cultures was a reflection of his remarkable capacity to connect and empathize. Fluent in five languages, Gehzai could converse and engage anyone, transcending barriers with ease and grace.
A devoted father to his daughters—Abeba, Saba, Seble, Alem, Nazareth, son Tesfualem and Yordanos Kahsay, his proudest accomplishment was nurturing a family that carries forward his legacy of love and kindness. His grandchildren—Yemane, Fiamttea, Jordanos, Ruthie, Terrance, Meghanna, and Essak—enjoyed the warmth of his affection while great-grandson Abraham will grow knowing the tales of his great-grandfather's gentle spirit.
In the early years, Gehzai stood as a pillar of strength, dedicating his efforts to protect his homeland from being overshadowed by Ethiopia's ambitions. This courageous stance nurtured a profound love and admiration for his country, a sentiment echoed in every story he shared.
Though he departed from this earthly realm, Gehzai has joined the company of his beloved father, mother, sisters, and brother, returning to the embrace of his family beyond the skies. His essence, however, remains woven into the fabric of life, in the gardens that bloom with his touch, the stories shared with his children and grandchildren, and the smiles he fostered among friends.
As we gather our memories of Gehzai Beyin, may we celebrate a life rich in kindness—a life that turned every encounter into a blossoming event, each relationship into a flourishing garden. His legacy will endure, reminding us all to love fiercely, embrace diversity, and spread warmth wherever we go.
