On March 22, after a prolonged illness, Gene Meister passed away. She was born December 10, 1922 in Canon City Colorado, to Reid and Georgie Rose McNeil. The family moved to Portland when Gene was a year old. Gene grew up in Portland Oregon and attended Grant High School and St. Helens Hall.
Gene went to Business school and worked for many Portland area companies: Northwest Poultry, Kaiser Shipyards, Templeton Lumber Co. and Briggs Gething Optical. She met Harry G. Meister in Portland during the decommissioning of his ship following WWII. They were married May 18, 1946, at Grace Memorial Church in Portland. The couple had three children: Bradford Leigh, Georgene and Annette.
Gene and Harry lived in New York City and Old Greenwich, Conneticut. They moved to Portland in December of 1946. Gene was a member of the National Society of Colonial Dames XVII Century, she volunteered as the president of PTA Fernwood grade school, YWCA thrift shop as well as being elected to the board, and at Albertina Kerr resale shop.
Gene and Harry traveled the world combining business with pleasure and just vacationing, seeing much of Europe and Asia. In their retirement, they bought a 40 foot fifth wheel travel trailer, and traveled the United States, Mexico and Canada for 19 years. In 1992, they moved to Vancouver, Washington.
The couple had three children: Bradford Leigh, Georgene and Annette.
She is survived by her husband of 67 years, Harry Meister, her son Bradford Meister and daughters Georgene (Wayne) Gwilliam and Auna (Kevin) Ferguson. Gene has two grandsons, three grand daughters, one great grandson and one great granddaughter.
A stay at home mother, she was president of the Fernwood PTA, on the board of the YWCA, and as a volunteer, did pricing for Albertina Kerr's antique shop.
Gene will be interred at Rose City Cemetery; a private family ceremony will held in her honor. Remembrances may be made to Albertina Kerr Centers Portland Oregon.
