Dr. George Y. Marumoto
George Yoshiro Marumoto O.D. passed away on February 26, 2009, in Portland, OR, at the age of 90.
Dr. George Y. Marumoto was born on March 7, 1918 to Minejiro and Hatsune (Imoto) Marumoto, and graduated from Lincoln High School in 1937. He went on to attend North Pacific College of Optometry and graduated with his Doctor of Optometry degree during the spring of 1940.
George met his beloved wife Tana in Minneapolis during the summer of 1942 while he was stationed at Camp Savage and they were married in October of that year. While at Camp Savage, he was assigned to the Military Intelligence Service Language School, which played an instrumental role within the military campaign being waged in the Pacific theatre. In the spring of 1943, he was assigned to Brisbane, AUS where he served as an MIS interpreter/interrogator with the Australian Army. His three-year overseas tour of duty also included assignments on Biak Island, Morotai Island, North Borneo, the Philippines, Okinawa and Tokyo, Japan. He was discharged in the spring of 1946 and returned to his hometown of Portland, Oregon where he rejoined his wife Tana and began his career in optometry, which he practiced for over 32 years.
George was first and foremost a family man; the family always came first. He was an honest, friendly, hard-working and caring man who provided well for his family. He was a well respected man to family, friends and the community. His quick wit and humorous insight made him pleasant and enjoyable company and he and his wife Tana were always befriending people wherever they would go.
George was an avid fly fisherman and outdoorsman who enjoyed all the beauty that Oregon had to offer. Spring through fall weekends were usually spent with the family on Oregon rivers and summer vacations were often fun-filled camping adventures. He was also a member of the JACL and Epworth Methodist Church and had previously been involved with the Oregon Nisei Vets as well as the Lions Club.
Survivors include sons Phil of Portland, and Kerry of Ketchum, ID; daughter Georgia of Portland; granddaughter Andrea (Ed) of Edison, NJ and great-grandchildren Ethan and Emily. His wife Tana preceded him in death.
A memorial service will be held at 2PM on Saturday, April 4, 2009 at Epworth Methodist Church, Portland. In lieu of flowers, remembrances can be made to Epworth Methodist Church and the Japanese Garden.
