Georgianne Marie Obinger, May 15, 1947 – November 11, 2016
Georgianne lived a life characterized by independence, courage, and accomplishment, despite the limitations set by a major spinal cord injury suffered in a diving accident at age 16. Gigi, as she was lovingly called by friends and family, graduated from Madison High School and Portland State University, where she obtained a master’s degree in special education. She lived independently in the north Mt. Tabor neighborhood of Portland, supported by many faithful caregivers who often became dear friends. Georgianne enjoyed music, movies, eating out, and trips to the beach. She adored her seven nephews and nieces, and delighted in the births of 10 great nephews and great nieces. She recently retired from a career as a disability advocate for the Department of Human Services. A severe respiratory virus led to her death. Georgianne was a quadriplegic for 53 years, and her life was a testimony to her intelligence, tenacity, and faith. She was predeceased by her parents, George and Edna Obinger; and she is survived by her sisters, Susan Johnson and Karen Whitehill. A memorial celebration will be held at Mt. Tabor Presbyterian Church on SE 55th and Belmont, on Monday, Nov. 28th at 6:30 p.m. All who knew and loved Gigi are welcome to attend.
