Howard Johnson, Jr. was the older of two children born to Rena Lee (Young) and Howard Johnson, Sr. (Skinny) on July 10, 1932 in St. Louis, Mo. His sister, Dorothy Mae was born in 1934. His parents and brother, Ervin Johnson, preceded him in death. His early childhood was spent in St. Louis where he attended the St. Louis Public Schools.
Howard moved to Portland, Oregon to live with his father, Howard Sr., and grandmother, Beulah (Granny Beul) Barnes, during his teen years and attended school there. He made new friends in Portland and was given the "nickname" Mutt. He entered the Air Force in 1949 and traveled to Okinawa, Japan and was later based at Scott Air Force Base in Illinois. He honed his technical skills in radio and communications; and after an honorable discharge Howard began a career in mass media and telecommunications.
Howard married Ethel Lee Manlove in 1956 and to this union two sons were born, Howard Steven (Stevie) and Darryl. He was also a father to Michael and Sandra Manlove. They divorced some years later. Howard met Mearita Bagley and together they brought another son, Andre' Pierre Johnson, into the family. Howard was a devoted father, grandfather, brother, uncle, cousin and great-grandfather. He loved his family and there was nothing he wouldn't do to show his kindness and love of family.
Howard was an avid traveler and he made frequent trips to St. Louis, Tennessee, Atlanta, and California and was a light and joy for all to see. Howard liked basketball, jazz music, and giving out his "words of wisdom." Howard worked for the City of Portland, Pacific Northwest Bell and he retired from AT&T. In his spare time he repaired televisions, radios and was a trouble shooter for home technical and electrical problems. On Wednesday morning, February 29, 2012, Howard was called to eternal rest.
