Ivan "Mike" Shmilenko was born on July 11, 1922 in Kiev, Ukraine, the son of Michael and Fedora Shmilenko. He was raised and educated in Kiev, where he earned his degree in bookkeeping. He met Alexandra Chachalova in Germany, and they were married on June 22, 1946. Their daughter Tonia was born in Germany in 1947and the family immigrated to Portland by crossing the Atlantic aboard the vessel "General Blanchard". They arrived in New York on March 22, 1951 and then took a train across the United States to Portland. The family was instrumental in founding St. John the Baptist Ukrainian Orthodox Church where they were united with other Ukrainians. In 1955, Mike bought the Oregon Roofing Co. which he ran until he retired. He enjoyed fishing and spending time in Depoe Bay with his family and friends. Mike said his hobby was roofing and he fished in his spare time. He passed away on February 5 at the age of 89 and is survived by his wife, Alexandra; his children: Tonia, John, and Mike; and by 5 grandchildren: Erika, Inger, Steven, Andrew, & Alex. A Trisagion Service will be held at 6:00 pm, Sunday, Feb. 12 and the funeral will be at 11:00 am, Monday, Feb. 13 at Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Cathedral, 3131 NE Glisan Street, Portland.
