Jack Earl Morrison

August 2, 1917 — January 22, 2007

Jack E. Morrison, 89, a longtime Portland resident, died peacefully in his sleep on Jan 22nd, 2007. He was born to Herman and Pauline Morrison in Bellingham Washington. When he was an infant his family, which included older brother Elwood and Sister Evelyn, moved to the Hawthorne area of Portland. He attended Richmond Grade School and Franklin High School. After graduating from Franklin, he attended Oregon State College, where he graduated with a business degree in 1939. While there, he became a member of the Phi Gamma Delta fraternity. The friendships formed with the "Phi Ga(TM)s" continued throughout his life. He was active in track, excelling in the javelin throw, and did some announcing and photography for the field games. He was proud of the fact that he won a national title for his fraternity, throwing the baseball. An outdoor enthusiast, he often spoke of the time he and some friends climbed Mr. Hood from Government Camp, before Timberline was built and of climbing to the top of Multnomah Falls before there was a trail to the top. It was at Oregon State that he met the love of his life, Grace Marie Wheeler. They were married on September 17, 1939 and moved back to Portland.
As a young man, he worked for his father at the N.W. Oil Company, later nameda(TM) the Morrison Oil Co. Because his fathera(TM)s business sold aviation fuel to the government, he didna(TM)t join the armed services during WWII, but as a lifelong history buff he loved reading about the war. When his father died in 1958, he took over the company as president and worked there until his retirement in 1982.
In his middle years he was active in business groups. He was a charter member of St. Johna(TM)s Rotary and was a member of the Oregon Oil Jobbers and the ILMA. He and Grace Marie loved to play cards and golf and for many years were members of the Riverside Golf and Country Club, where he served as president in 1971. He also loved to fly and after earning his license would occasionally fly to Idaho and Washington for business meetings. In the fall, he would clean up his guns and take his sons and later grandsons out hunting. He collected guns and became a lifetime member of the NRA in the 1940's. He liked both duck and deer hunting and, according to his grandsons, was the best marksman in the group. In the winter, he and Grace Marie would travel to Palm Desert for a month of golf with their friends. They took many cruises and he especially liked traveling thru the Panama Canal. They traveled to Europe, Australia, New Zealand, Russia and China. For their 50th anniversary he planned a trip down the Danube just months before the fall of the Iron Curtain.

After retiring they built a home in Sunriver. He left the first floor unfinished so that he would have a project to complete that first year of retirement. These were the years he enjoyed the most. He always managed to have time for his hobbies, especially woodworking and his hunting dogs. Many family members have either a piece of furniture he made, or one of his bird carvings. He loved having his grandchildren around and was always up for a heated debate about politics. He will be especially remembered for fixing Tom and Jerry drinks for Christmas, always being the first to start washing dishes after family gatherings, and reading while smoking his pipe.
He lived a long full life, happy in his marriage and with many lifelong friends. He was a kind and generous man, who was deeply loved and respected by all his family. He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Grace Marie, his sons Jack and Glen, daughter Barbara, daughter in law Billie, grandchildren; Terren, Paula, Heather, Troy, Aaron, David, Travis, Trent, 10 great-grandchildren and 3 great-great-grandchildren.
