James was born in West Point, Mississippi. He moved to Portland, Oregon as a teenager with his father, sister and brother.
James served in the United States Army, and worked as a Pressman at the Oregonian for about 40 years.
James was preceded in death by his mother, Alfreida Snowden Birt; father, Jack Birt; sister, Willie Ella Casey; and son, James Donald Birt.
James was a caring, supportive brother, father, grandfather, uncle, friend and neighbor who will be greatly missed.
A viewing will be held Saturday, July 31, 2010 9:00 am to 4:00 pm and Sunday August 1, 2010 1:00 pm to 4:00 pm at Rose City Funeral Home. A celebration of life will be held 6:00 pm to 8:30 pm Saturday, August 7, 2010 at Westminster Presbyterian Church in the courtyard.
