James Price (JP) Moss passed away on July 20, 2024 at the age of 55. His perseverance through serious medical challenges in recent years highlighted his drive for life and his deep desire to cherish every moment with his loved ones.
JP was born to Sidney and Priscilla Moss in Kittanning, Pennsylvania on April 11, 1969. At age 12, he moved to Portland, Oregon. His years at Grant High School were incredibly special to him, where he thrived in student body roles and activities. He earned a Bachelor's Degree from Willamette University and years later, an MBA from George Fox University.
His first job was at KB Toys at Lloyd Center where he demonstrated an innate business sense by becoming the company’s youngest assistant manager. He then put his interest in aquatics to work and began lifeguarding after his sophomore year of high school, which opened the door to several aquatics roles with Portland Parks and Recreation and an entrepreneurial career in swimwear. His company, Portland Swimwear, peaked with eight stores and included swimsuit and swim goggle manufacturing. His adept skills in operational efficiency served as the backbone of highly successful consulting work with municipalities where he implemented process and systems improvements to keep aquatic centers afloat. Perhaps most importantly, throughout his entire career, JP recognized and celebrated the people who worked for and with him. He truly understood that his life’s work was not just about business, it was a human endeavor.
JP married Sharie Juckeland in August 1997 and had four children whom he adored more than anything in life. While working full-time, he always stayed busy. JP was the founding president of a business group that’s still active today. That group was like family to him and an integral part of his adult life, especially supportive with his recent health challenges. He deeply enjoyed gatherings and activities with family and friends – bringing something special to so many events. JP enjoyed poker, blackjack, barbeques, movies, Steelers games, politics, coaching youth sports, and so much more.
We will miss JP’s optimism, curiosity, innovative thinking, care, happy-go-lucky self, and “big love.” He is survived by his children Benjamin, Ainsley, and Eli Moss, mother Priscilla Moss, brother and sister-in-law Gregory and Karen Moss, sister and brother-in-law Jonelle and Andy Phelps, and nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his son Oliver, father Sidney, grandparents, uncle and cousin.
A memorial service will be held to celebrate JP’s life on Saturday, August 10th at 10:00 am at The Matson Building, 10713 NE 117th Avenue, Vancouver WA. All are welcome.
