James Smith, Sr.

June 6, 1926 — September 26, 2010

James Smith was born on June 6, 1926 in Batesville, Alabama to the union of Monroe Smith and Lillie E. (Anderson) Smith. He was the first of seven children born to this union. He was raised in Chicago, Illinois, and was working with the Union Pacific Railroad, when his job relocated him to Portland, Oregon in 1943. He retired from Union Pacific in 1989. He met and married Barbara Sellers, and this union was blessed with eight children. James was a very loving and caring person, and reached out to a lot of people. He was a member of the Vancouver Avenue First Baptist Church under the leadership of the Reverend O.B. Williams. James was called home to be with the Lord on September 26, 2010 at the age of 84 years. James was preceded in death by his parents, and by his son Eric. He leaves to cherish his memory his brothers and sisters: Jessie Smith of Portland, Oregon, Monroe Smith of Chicago, Illinois, Jannie (Smith) Barbra of Chicago, Illinois, Thelma (Smith) Sites of Chicago, Illinois, Velma (Smith) Carter of Chicago, Illinois, and Mary Smith of Chicago, Illinois; his children: Dennis Smith, Deborah Smith, Dale Smith, Frederick Smith, Deeta Smith, James M. Smith, and Christell Smith, all of Portland, Oregon; 17 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren, and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
