James Michael White, known as "Mick, Mike and Big White", died peacefully July 17, 2017, at the age of 78 in Portland.
Mike was born in Chicago, and graduated from St. Clare of Montefalco elementary and De La Salle High School where he was known for his basketball hook shot. Mike received the Mayor Daley Youth of the Year Scholarship which enabled him to attend and graduate from University of Notre Dame before getting his MBA from Ohio State.
Mike and his first wife Eileen road tripped to Oregon where Mike started his career as a professor at OSU, followed by working for Price Waterhouse, Dant & Suran, and University of Portland as a professor for more than 14 years.
Mike spent years leading CPE seminars for the AICPA and the Oregon and Washington Societies of CPAs. He received many distinguished awards throughout his career. Mike was a founding member of the Central Catholic Friends of Fine Arts, and spent many years as a volunteer at All Saints School and Church. Mike enjoyed volunteering with the Safeway Classic and traveling by train.
Mike had the gift of gab and loved entertaining an audience with infamous stories. He will always be remembered for his quick wit, intellectual sense of humor and his love of newspapers.
Mike was preceded in death by his parents, James and Kathryn; brother, Patrick; and grandson, Dominic. He is survived by his wife, Dona; children, Maura, Michael and Meghan; step-daughter, Amy (Juan Gomez); grandchildren, Angelo, Anthony, Andreas, Nicholas, Annamarie, Sofia and Javier; sisters, Sharon Ryan and Maureen Dalton; and many nieces, nephews, and great-nieces/nephews.
We are thankful for the care provided by Laurelhurst Village, Gracelen Terrace and Providence Hospice. A service will be held at 7 p.m., Thursday, Sept. 7, 2017, at All Saints Church. In lieu of flowers, donations are suggested to University of Portland, Oregon Humane Society or Mother & Child Education Center.
