Janice Evelyn Rianda, 73, entered into God's hands on Saturday, October 27, 2012 following a brief illness.
Born on September 30, 1939, in Tillamook, OR., Jan was the second daughter of Walt and Ruth Kautto. Following graduation from Tillamook High School (where she was named outstanding thespian, newspaper editor and honor student) in 1957, she entered the University of Oregon and graduated in 1961 with a degree in journalism. She was a member of Delta Zeta sorority and the U of O women's journalism honorary and served on the staff of the U of O's Emerald (student newspaper). She was a life member of the University of Oregon Alumni Association and with her husband established the David and Janice Rianda Visiting Professional in Ethics Fund and were members of the U of O Presidents' Associates.
Jan's exceptional skills in writing, editing and public relations were greatly appreciated and supported by a number of nonprofit organizations including University of Oregon News Bureau (senior staff writer), University of Wisconsin, Milwaukee, News Bureau, and locally with Tolstoy Foundation (refugee resettlement), YMCA Portland corporate office (marketing and communications), Nickelsen Clark Advertising (public relations), Dental Aid for Children in Washington County (public relations and fundraising), and Volunteer Works (recruitment coordinator and PR specialist). She served as a columnist for the Woodstock Independent News and was a respected freelance writer and editor.
Her writing interests were rivaled by her voracious appetite for reading, her keen interest in politics, ethics in journalism and the media, as well as her love of singing. For more than 25 years, she was an active member of a reading group, The Coven, and the vocal group, The Noteables. Jan also served in key volunteer leadership positions with community organizations including OASIS (board chair), Young Audiences (president), Women in Communications (vice president), and St. Rose of Lima Choir (soprano) among others.
Surviving is her husband of 49 years, David Rianda; two children, son Christopher Rianda (Heidi) and daughter Jill Rianda; and two much loved grandchildren, Luca and Lili Rianda. Jan's siblings include Pat Andersen (Bob), John Kautto (Judy), Carla Kelly, Christie Gettle, and Paige McMillen (Gary) and her brother-in-law Leland Rianda (Nancy). She also leaves 14 nieces and nephews, their spouses and children.
Gifts in her memory may be made to organizations of the donors' choice.
