Joanne Magill

Joanne Magill was born in Portland on Sept. 5, 1934, and passed away July 16, 2008 of cancer. She attended Rose City Park Elementary School and Grant High, graduating in 1952 and was active on every Grant reunion committee up to the 50th reunion in 2002. Jerome and Joanne were married March 17, 1990. Joanne was a life-long devotee of the arts. She gave generously of her time in support of local arts organizations including acting as supernumerary with
Portland Opera, dancing with the Civic Theatre, and serving on the Board of Directors of the Portland Opera Guild. She studied ballet for many years and studied under Jacqueline Schumacher and Nicholas Vasilief. She taught ballet in the park districts of Eugene, Springfield, and Portland where she shared her love of ballet with young students. She was self-employed as a professional seamstress. No bride in the family ever had to wonder from where her wedding dress would come. Joanne had a strong fashion sense, and never left the house without a color-coordinated outfit including hat. She was a loving person, very elegant and gracious, who always maintained an optimistic and positive outlook. She had a way of making everyone around her feel comfortable and welcome, no matter what the circumstances. She was a life-long member of the Cherry Park Methodist Church and sang in the church choir. She is survived by her husband, Jerome Magill of Portland; sister, Barbara Buman of Orcas Island, Wash.; brother, Jim Stout of Portland; children, Matt Adkins of Portland, and Debbie Fischer of Phoenix, Ariz.; two nieces; two nephews; three grandchildren; three stepchildren; seven step grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. Remembrances to the Portland Opera Association. A celebration of life will be on Tuesday, July 29, 2008, 5:30 - 8 p.m. at the Laurelhurst Club, 3721 SE Ankeny. Food, Drink and Music.
