John was born in Portland to John Henry Sr., and Mildred Hipes. He attended Franklin High School and worked for Land O Lakes as a Millman and forklift operator. He had three children: John W., Christi and Lee Ann. He was a member of the East Gate Lodge Mason's as well as a Greeter for the Shriners. John loved to serve his community and he loved Pig N Pancake.
John is survived by his children: John and his wife Charlene Hipes, Lee Ann Paul and her husband Jim, and Christi Hipes; his brother and sister in law: Gerald and Alyce Hipes; grandchildren: John Hipes and wife Olivia, Christa Engom and husband Andy, Jeremy Hipes and wife Tabatha, and Jamie Paul-Williams; great grandchildren: Brianna Hipes, Jacob Hipes, Alysha Hipes, Joshua Hipes, Paige Hipes, Wyatt Engom, and CadieAnn Engom; special friends: Beverly Hipes and Ignacio Castaneda.
