John Jene Fessel,
May 19, 1953 – November 7, 2013
John Fessel ("Johnny to most) was a loving person who was loved by many. He was quick with a joke and a smile and was known for his stories and good humor.
He was born in the foothills of the Sierra Mountains in California to Eloyse Melton Fessell and Elton "Al" Fessel. The family moved to The Dalles, Oregon, where he attended high school and managed the school football team. John loved nature: he enjoyed collecting rocks and fishing. In high school, he remembered refusing to dissect frogs and getting permission to instead draw pictures of eagles, dolphins and whales. He also enjoyed metalworking
John served in the Army in artillery from 1973 to 1979. He was a very proud veteran for the rest of his life. John loved to make and collect models of ships, tanks, and other military memorabilia. John volunteered for many years at the Oregon Museum of Science and Industry, where we helped in the Paleontology Department.
John met his life partner, Leith Brooks Macfarlane, in 1992. John and Leith lived together in the Multnomah neighborhood of Portland where they have many friends. John was known for his ability to connect with many people, whether a cashier at a mini-mart or a waitress. Johnny loved his family dearly. He was a wonderful soul mate to Leith, a son, brother, brother-in-law, nephew, uncle, and loyal friend to many. He brought joy and laughter to all who crossed his path in life.
In addition to Leith, John is survived by his brothers Jay and Jim, his sister-in-law, Patti (married to his brother Steven who passed in 2005), as well as his niece Mandy, and his nephews Justin, Travis, Jesse, and Cody . John loved and was loved by his family and friends.
