Joseph Manson Payton

November 23, 1931 — October 16, 2011

Joseph Manson Payton was born in Portland Oregon to Harry and Lielia Payton. He was called home to glory October 16th, 2011. Just one month short of his 80th birthday. Joe's home going celebration will be held at 11:00am Friday October 28th 2011, at Hughes Memorial UMC, 111 NE Failing St., Portland OR, 97212. There will also, be a viewing Thursday the 27th, 10:30-5:00pm at Rose City Funeral Home for loved ones who would like to come see Joe and say their goodbyes.

Joe is survived by his loving wife Shirley Payton; they were married December 14th, 1979. Joe was the love of her life. He is also survived by 7 sons and 5 daughters as well as a host of grandchildren, great grandchildren and great great grandchildren needless to say Joe was loved by many!

Joe was preceded in death by his Father Harry Payton and his mother Lielia Payton, son Joseph Carlos Payton, as well as 2 grand children, Clarence Johnson, and Kehinde Payton, and 2 great grand children, Andre Payton, and De'Andranique Payton.

Joseph Payton was an amazing man whose smile could light up a room. He spent his life working to help others. He truly believed in paying it forward. Joe spent 10 years working at the Urban League of Portland as the director of adult and senior services; helping to implement many programs which are still serving those in need today. Joseph always had a passion for helping those in need. (That's just who he was) Following that passion Joseph left the Urban League to become a drug and alcohol counselor at Columbia River Correctional Institute; where he spent the next ten years building his T.I.G.E.R. Program: Trust In God And Everything's Right. Words that he truly lived by. While working at CRCI Joseph also earned his CADCII. He then continued counseling at CODA's Alpha House of Portland, where he would later retire.

Not only was Joe a good provider for his family, he was also passionate in his interest for bowling and music. He loved to sing and had a wonderful voice. He was also in love with jazz, often imitating the sounds of the instruments with his voice. Joe was a boxer, record setting weightlifter and all around amazing person who will deeply and truly be missed.
We Love You Joe!!
