Obituary of Joyce Ann Smith

A Mass of Christian Burial for Joyce Ann Smith will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, March 28, at St. Charles Catholic Parish, 5310 NE 42nd St., Portland, with committal burial at Rose City Cemetery to follow. Joyce passed away Sunday, March 20, at her home surrounded by her family’s love and support. She was 87 years old.

Joyce was born Aug. 1, 1928 in Portland, Ore., the youngest of three daughters of Murray Francis and Sylvia Gladys (Hanson) Moore. Raised in Northeast Portland, she graduated from Jefferson High School, class of 1944, at the age of 16. Four years later, on Aug. 8, 1948, she married William Roy Smith, the man she would love, enjoy life with and care for until his death on March 22, 1997. From this union they had four children. Joyce was a member of Holy Redeemer Catholic Church until 1962 when the family joined St. Charles Catholic Parish. She enjoyed being a homemaker, raising her children, being a grandma, tending her rose garden, cooking and sewing.

Joyce is survived by her children and their spouses, Michael (Debra), Thomas, Douglas (Trish) and Sharon (Shawn); her 9 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren and her sister and best friend, Gloria. She was preceded in death by her husband, parents and her eldest sister, Betty, who died in her teen years.
