Fisher, Julia C. 76 Oct. 13, 1935 March 19, 2012 Julia C. Fisher was born in Portland on Oct. 13, 1935, to Giuseppina and Carlo Cartasegna, who were Italian immigrant produce farmers in the Parkrose area for many years. She was the third of four children. Julia was born during the Depression and knew difficult times. After school she would help on her family's farm where they grew corn, tomatoes, beans and other crops. Some people may even remember their fruit stand that she ran for many years. Her favorite pastime was going to the movies. She loved the old movies with Roy Rogers, Clark Gable, Elizabeth Taylor, John Wayne and Marlon Brando, to name a few. Julia graduated from Parkrose High School in 1953 as an honor student. On April 14, 1956, Julia married Arthur E. Fisher of Canby. They lived in Portland. Julia worked for the state of Oregon after graduating high school then decided to help take care of her mom and help her dad on their farm. After her parents passed on, she continued farming most of her life as she "loved to see things grow." Julia and Arthur bought a small raspberry farm and grew the sweetest and biggest raspberries around and various fruits and vegetables. Julia's other favorite pastime was working in her flowers. She had a beautiful rose garden and was very proud of her flowers. She just had that special touch when it came to growing anything. In 1988, Julia and her family started selling their produce and fruit at the Gresham Farmers' Market and continued to do so for 20 years. In 2008, Julia's family started the Parkrose Farmers' Market to honor her for all her years of farming in Parkrose and also because it was her favorite pastime to go every Saturday. Julia was outgoing and loved people. She was an icon of the market and never missed a Saturday rain or shine. When possible, Julia would venture to the beach to catch razor clams or go to Mt. Adams to pick huckleberries. She was a person who loved the outdoors. She also loved attending Winterhawk games and was a season ticket holder for many years. Once Julia's grandchildren came along they were the apple of her eye. She would take care of them through their young childhood years. In return, since Julia never got a real vacation her family packed Julia up and took her to Disneyland. This became her favorite place prompting as many trips as possible. She is survived by her husband, Arthur; daughter and son-in-law, Joy and Steve Voorhees; and her two grandchildren, Molly and David Voorhees. Julia passed away peacefully at Good Samaritan Hospital after a long fight with diabetes and kidney disease on March 19, 2012. Julia grew up a strong Catholic, a faith that she passed on to her family. Julia's service will include a rosary at St. Rita's Parish, 10029 N.E. Prescott, Portland, OR on Monday, March 26, 2012, at 7 p.m., and a Catholic Mass on Tuesday, March 27, 2012, beginning at 11 a.m., with a viewing starting at 10 a.m., also at St. Rita's Parish, where a processional will follow service to Gethsemane Cemetery with a short graveside commitment.
