KAORU DICK MIGAKI
January 25, 1921 – January 9, 2013
The Family of Dick Migaki welcomes you to a celebration of his life.
Dick was born in Pendleton, Oregon to Jitsunoshin and Shinano Migaki. Dick, along with his younger brother, Frank, comprised the rest of the Migaki family. The family later moved to Portland. During WWII, Dick was required to live at Minidoka internment camp in Idaho but was transferred to Tule Lake in California until the end of the war. After the war, Dick spent time in Yakima, WA and Sacramento, CA, eventually moving back to Portland where he met and married, Sumiko Soga on November 16, 1952. In 1955 Ken was born, then Akemi in 1960 and Susu in 1961.
Dick first became a barber cutting hair in downtown Portland. Not long after he went to work for the Portland Terminal Railroad and remained there until his retirement in 1984. One of his proudest accomplishments was helping to build the Portland Zoo Railway, still operating to this day. He was a master gardener and took pride in his Bonsai and Japanese landscaping, even doing the landscaping at Union Station for several years until retirement. Every fall, he enjoyed hunting for matsutake mushrooms on the slopes of Mt. Hood. In his spare time he enjoyed photography and to be challenged by the games of Go and Shogi. After his retirement, Dick was blessed with three grandsons, Dane, Blake and Reed. He is survived by his wife, Sumi, children Ken, Akemi (husband Eric), Susu and his grandsons. He was predeceased by his brother Frank and grandson Drew.
