In loving memory of a dear lady who most knew as "Grannie" also known as Kary Tardy. She was a mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, cousin and a friend of many. After having fought a long battle of illness Kary passed away peacefully at her home residing in the Marquis Care Center at Piedmont on November 1, 2011. She was born September 3rd, 1940 in Belzoni, Mississippi where she was raised up until she was a teenager. She along with her mother and siblings later relocated to Columbus, Ohio where she later met and married McCoy Tardy Jr.
Kary was one of 6 children born to the late John H. Bell Sr., and Bessie Jennings Bell. She was the second to the youngest child. Preceding her in death were her brothers and sister: Robert Buggs Jr. (Snook), Annie Britt (Aunt Nell) and Wilbert Bell (Billy).
She is survived by her children: McCoy III (Space) and wife Patrisha Tardy, Terrance (Terry) and wife Cynthia Tardy and Angela (Angie) Michelle Tardy.
Kary also known as "Grannie," was the grandmother of six and great grandmother of four. Grandchildren are: Myra Ford, Sparkle Ford, Terrance Tardy II, Antonio Tardy, Shawn Tardy and Natalie Carvajal.
Great Grandchildren: Kaya Ford, Isaiah Pittman, Antonio Tardy II and Hason Tardy.
Siblings: Willie and Edna Harris of Jackson, Mississippi, John (Sootie) Bell Jr., and long term special friend Sue Jackson of Columbus, Ohio and Delores (Lois) and husband Wallace Sanders of Portland, Oregon and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends; with a special mention to long term friend of Columbus, Ohio Connie Pleasant.
Kary was blessed in many ways and touched the lives of many people. She had a great sense of humor, a nurturing personality and a gift of gab. No matter where she was at or where she lived it seemed Kary knew the whole town and was liked by many.
As a young child she and her sisters were like tom boys having grown up with brothers. Often times they'd be barefoot running through the fields chasing each other or playing "stick ball" to others known as "baseball." Other times were spent baking potatoes under the ashes at grandmother's house. During the holidays she loved the smell of fresh oranges and raisins as the smell of "sweetness" overcame the air and filled her mother's house.
As she grew older she worked as a cook at a local café called the "Friendly Grill" in Columbus, Ohio. Each day Kary would come home from work often talking about how many pork chop sandwiches had been sold that day. Everyone knew and loved Kary and often many people came to the Friendly Grill just to sample Kary's cooking. It seems from the time she was old enough to cook and up until the time she fell sick she had always been known for her delicious, well-seasoned soul food dishes.
In 1979 she and her children moved to Portland. She met a couple named Ida and Bob Johnson who owned a café called the Alberta Fish and Poultry located on 17th and Alberta. There too she worked as a cook. Everyone in Portland knew they could always go to Alberta Street and grab a taste some of the best fish in town or order a big "shock burger".
In the early 80's Kary received a job working in the cafeteria for Portland Public School District. She later worked her way up and into the Print Shop operating press machines to publish educational materials that would be distributed to students throughout the district. She loved her job and cherished all of the people she worked with. After 30 years of hard work and dedication she finally retired.
Most of her retirement was spent raising her grandson Antonio Tardy who she loved dearly. She loved to cook and was good at it. She was known for having the best hog head cheese around town which was her specialty. In her spare time she'd sell dinners and hog head cheese to make spare change or bill money. At times when she wasn't busy cooking she and her sister Lois would hop in the car and grab lunch at Burger king and sit in the parking lot talking, sitting and watching the traffic drive by. Other times would be spent at the grocery store at Fred Meyers or Safeway and for those who knew of both knew they would be gone for very long hours.
Kary was a member of Mallory Church of Christ where she fellowshipped and worshipped each week. She enjoyed singing and humming gospel hymns, listening to the sermon and being in the kitchen standing alongside her fellow church family members.
Now we must say goodbye and celebrate her life on this day and give glory to the one who sent her to us. We must know that as the LORD prepared her mind and body, Kary had great support throughout her time of illness. She was sent a team of people that included both family and friends whom our father the lord and savior knew would look after her as he prepared her for her day of homecoming. Her sons, both McCoy and Terrance Tardy took great care of their mother and never left her to want for much of anything. She will be missed by many by all her children, family and friends and several will mourn the loss of the lady once known as "Grannie." Although Kary cannot be here with us today, her spirit will be with us each day walking beside us just as the LORD walked beside her as she walked her own journey through this thing we call life.
