Kristy Colleen Kalali-Thompson

Kristy Colleen Lunning Kalali Thompson was born on March 27th, 1955, in Bagley, Minnesota to Harvey & Darlene Lunning. She died on September 9th, 2021 in Portland, Oregon.

Kristy was the second born daughter of the Lunnings. Raised in Milwaukie, Oregon, Kristy attended Ardenwald Elementary School, Milwaukie Junior High & Milwaukie High School. She loved choir & was always proud to be a Milwaukie Mustang. After high school she began Mt. Hood Community College seeking to get a legal secretary degree, but married &  became a mother. What an excellent mother she was! She gave motherhood her everything. Going between Saudi Arabia & the US, it would be a number of years later but still desiring a degree, she went back & earned her degree in Elementary Education from Warner Pacific College.

Kristy met Nofal Kalali of Jeddah, Saudi Arabia in 1974, at a Lewis & Clark college event. They had both a beautiful, larger church wedding & a smaller Islamic ceremony. This union bore five children: Majida (Suheilah), Naif, Mohammed, Summar & Ahmed. Kristy was always happiest when she was surrounded by her family & children, enjoying lavishing her love on them. Kristy & Nofal divorced in 1994. Her children have given her 13 grandchildren & a great-granddaughter.

Kristy couldn’t wait to retire to spend time with her family. She loved the sun & had planned a trip from September 6th to November 17th to her eldest daughter’s family in Florida. As God would plan it, three of her five children & four of her grandchildren were in Oregon to be with their mother/ grandmother before her passing. Her youngest son, Ahmed, was at her bedside when she departed.

Kristy also loved her extended family & was a beloved part of the assorted reunions, gatherings, weddings, vacations, dinners & get togethers with her parents, siblings, aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces & nephews. She was always first to pitch in to serve others & brought a kind & helpful spirit wherever she went. She had a special bond with each of her siblings. When her younger brother David had a stroke, she did not leave his side until he was fully recovered.

Through her church, Kristy met Troy Thompson of Oklahoma. A year later they  married. Kristy’s bridesmaids were her eldest daughter & her dearest friend, Michelle. Though the union didn’t bear children, four of Kristy’s older children have stayed at intervals with Troy & Kristy. Troy & Kristy have always been prayerful persons & their union extended that love &  prayer to their local & church communities. Many weekends they would give their time to caring for children during church services or going out to serve & pray for the needy in their community. They are members of the Bethesda church in Vancouver, Washington & resided in the SE Portland area. In August they had celebrated their 25th wedding anniversary.

Kristy loved children & she always wanted to make a difference to their lives. She worked as a teacher both overseas in Saudi Arabia & after she returned to Oregon. She then spent over 20 years employed for the Clackamas School District’s Transportation Division. She had just retired.

Kristy is survived by her husband, her siblings (Belinda Duval, David Lunning & Amy Solly), her children, her grandchildren & her great-grandchild.
