Lawrence Alfonso Alberti

July 22, 1916 — October 29, 2011

Lawrence passed away peacefully at the age of 95. Born in Wagoner, Ok., he came to Oregon with relatives in a covered wagon in 1921. Lawrence eventually settled in Portland with his mother, Bessie Alberti and brother Tom Alberti. Lawrence was a graduate of Benson Polytechnic High School , where he excelled in track and was a City Broad jump Champion. Lawrence served in the Army during WWII and returned to service in the Korean war where he achieved Master Sergeant status and oversaw over 150 soldiers.
After working as a Red Cap at Union Station, he found his career calling at the Lake Oswego Postal Service for twenty seven years. He was promoted to supervisor of the transportation and maintenance department. Lawrence was the first Afro American in Oregon to be elected to Grand Commander of the Military Order of the Cooties, an honored degree of the V.F.W.. He was also a member of the First Presbyterian Church. He participated in community activism and enjoyed an active social life with many friends and family members.
Lawrence was preceded in death by wives: Bernice Jeanmarie and Nadine Hines. He is survived by his daughter, Veronica Alberti; sons David and Lawrence J. Alberti; three grandchildren and two great grandchildren.
