Lewis LeRoy Haisch died in the early morning of Friday, February 1, 2008, at the age of 92. He was born November 29, 1915 in Winner, South Dakota to Edward and Olive Haisch.
Lewis grew up working on his family's farms in South Dakota and northern Nebraska. He graduated from Winner High School in the spring of 1933 and from Yankton College in South Dakota in the spring of 1938. While at Yankton College he majored in mathematics and chemistry with a minor in economics. That fall, he moved to Stanfield, Oregon, where he taught math and physical education at the high school, and met fellow teacher Irene Swanson, the woman who would become his wife.
They were married in her parents' home in Portland on June 12, 1941. Shortly before marrying, he began working as a chemist for Alcoa Aluminum in Vancouver, WA. In the 1950s, Lewis and Irene settled in Vancouver in a home that Lewis built. They had three children, a son, born in 1947 and twins (a son and daughter) born in 1951.
Lewis retired from Alcoa in 1981, serving as the supervising general chemist for the majority of his 40 years with the company. He was a long-time member of the American Chemical Society, serving as chairman of the Portland section.
Lewis enjoyed many hobbies and compiled an impressive record of volunteer service. He was skilled in photography, auto mechanics, woodworking and gardening. During retirement, he volunteered as a Master Gardener, worked in the gardens and the woodshop at the Fort Vancouver National Historic Site, and helped people in need by volunteering with FISH and Meals on Wheels.
He attended Friends churches in Vancouver, WA and Newberg, among others. He served in the church by being on the building committee and operating a tape ministry. Together, Lewis and Irene were also involved in the Twin Rocks Conference Center and established a scholarship fund at George Fox University.
In 1994, Lewis and Irene left behind their Vancouver home, with its large gardens and finely equipped woodshop, to move to a retirement community in Portland. Eventually, they moved to Friendsview Retirement Community in Newberg. Lewis maintained a garden plot there, and quickly became known as the "Popcorn Man." He also was instrumental in the project to restore the Hess Creek Canyon.
He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Irene, after 65 years of marriage. Survivors include: sons Carl of Greenville, N.C., and Keith of Dallas, OR; daughter Kathy Edwards of Portland; Sister Betty Howe of Medford; Sister Alice Luckhaupt, six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held on Friday, February 8th, at 10am at Newberg Friends Church.
Memorial contributions may be made to Twin Rocks Conference Center in care of Rose City Funeral Home, 5625 NE Fremont Street, Portland, OR 97213. Phone number is 503-281-3821. Interment at Newberg Friends Cemetery.
