Lorraine Roseanne Williamson Meadows Drougas was born Feb. 15, 1936 in Clinton, Iowa to Glen and Corina (Aanas) Williamson. She passed away at her home in Portland on Sept. 4, 2012. The daughter of a Methodist minister, she attended schools in Iowa, Oklahoma, Illinois and South Dakota, graduating as valedictorian from Wessington Springs (S.D.) Academy in 1954. She received her bachelor's degree, cum laude, from Warner Pacific College and her Master of Arts degree from Portland State University, majoring in education. In 1953 she married professor Robert Meadows in Wessington Springs, S.D., with whom she had four daughters, Christine, Rhonda, Linda and Sonja. In 1964 they moved to Portland where Lorraine has had an outstanding career as an elementary school teacher. In 1983 she married George Drougas who became her primary booster in both her professional and family careers. As an educator and a mother, Lorraine believed that every child has gifts. While teaching first and second grades at Chapman Elementary School, Lorraine devised a teaching tool (a beach-ball size inflatable globe with no place names) that earned a National Elementary School Recognition Program Award for 1989-90 and a major photo-story in The Oregonian. In 1982, another front-page story appeared on Lorraine's creativity in offering her Kindergartners a "Summer Correspondence Class" to prevent summertime learning losses. Lorraine has had several articles published in youth magazines and, just this year, saw her book, "Starter Stories for the Very Young Reader," published. As dedicated to her family as she was to her students, Lorraine was nominated by John Jacob Astor's school administration, faculty and PTA for the "Oregon Mother of the Year" award. She cherished her four daughters Christine, Rhonda, Linda and Sonja; and her 11 grandchildren. Lorraine is survived by her daughters; mother, Corina; her sister, Anita Archer; two brothers, Richard and William Williamson; grandchildren; many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. She is preceded in death by her father, Glen Williamson; and by her two husbands, Robert Meadows and George Drougas. A memorial service for Lorraine will be held Sunday, Sept. 16 at 2 p.m., at St. Augustana Lutheran Church, 2710 NE 14th Street, Portland. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to The Oregon Food Bank in memory of Lorraine.
