Lucille V. Lilley peacefully slipped away at her home this past Saturday, April 28. The funeral service is scheduled for 11:00am Saturday, May 5, 2007, at Rose City Cemetery and Funeral Home at 5625 NE Fremont St (503-281-3821). After the service, she will be laid to rest next to her husband Bill. She is survived by her three grandsons, Jeffery, Douglas and Michael Reynolds, and 2 great grandsons, Dakota and Max. She had 2 daughters, Nancy and Mary, who are both deceased.
Lucille was born to John and Amelia Werner in Ashton, SD, and was raised on the family homestead in Firesteel, SD. Her early life lessons revolved around the value of hard work, as she helped to care for the hogs and plow the fields from an early age. She was educated in the one-room schoolhouse built on land deeded by her father to the town of Firesteel. After her high school graduation, she moved to Everett, WA, in search of work during the depression. She married Walter William Lilley and moved to Portland in 1947, where she began volunteering as a cook at the local schools. By the time she retired in 1985, she had become a supervisor of the kitchen staff for several schools. As "the lunch lady" at Whittaker, Beaumont and Alameda schools, she touched the lives of many young kids. After her retirement, she was delighted to encounter these now grown up children in various walks of life, and all were happy to share their fond remembrances.
An avid gardener, she never stopped tilling the earth even after she left the family homestead so many years ago. She was digging in the dirt right up until the week before she passed away. Lucille suffered several medical conditions in her later life, and inspired those around her by how tough she was and how hard she fought to regain her health. Her family was the most important thing to her, and the lessons of hard work, toughness, kindness and family will be cherished by all those whose lives she touched.
