Marcelle Walker was born in Portland on June 8, 1912. Back when horses were still a major means of transportation, she had early memories of traveling in a horse and buggy with her father down to the Portland waterfront to sell their eggs to ships moored along the docks.
Marcelle's great grandparents came to the Oregon Territory in 1852 over the Oregon Trail. The "Richeys" were some of the earliest pioneers in the Portland area. Over the years Marcelle became the resident expert on family history. She always remembered the names, dates, and significant details of past family events.
Marcelle attended Kellogg Grade School and Franklin High School. She graduated from Franklin in 1929. An excelled student, Marcelle read widely: books, magazines, newspapers – it didn't matter. She gained knowledge on gardening, financial topics, collectibles, current events, politics, family history, home decorating and much more.
An interest in music led Marcelle to become the accompanist for a local choir group. There she met her future husband David Walker who was a singer in the choir. At the time he worked for the U. S. Forest Service erecting a lookout tower on a peak near Warm Springs Indian Reservation. Marcelle and Dave were married on June 21, 1935. They spent their honeymoon in the lookout tower on top of Peavine Mountain in the Mount Hood National Forest.
Early in their marriage, the Walkers bought a house in SE 44th, in the Woodstock area. Marcelle lived in that house for most of her adult life. For many years she worked at the Municipal Court for the Portland Police Department.
Gardening was Marcelle's keenest interest. She was a charter member of the Oregon Mushroom Society and belonged to a garden club. After retiring, Marcelle spent time traveling, tending her garden, entertaining guests, attending club meetings, cooking, and reading. She was a member of the Victory Chapter of the Eastern Star rising to the position of Worthy Matron. She also served as a docent for the Oregon Historical Society. Marcelle was an intelligent, kind, caring and warmhearted person. We will all miss her.
