On October 24, Marieann Eileen (Rora) Calcagno, a loving mother, sister, grandmother, aunt and dear friend, beloved by all who had the pleasure of knowing her, passed away peacefully after a long battle with dementia. She was eighty-one.
Born in Tacoma, Washington to Larry and Eileen Rora, Marieann had two sisters - Judy who died in early childhood and Laurie. After the family moved to Vancouver, Marieann was lucky enough to meet her lifelong best friend Barbara. The two were inseparable even when they resided in different states during their adult lives. Marieann met Richard Calcagno and married in February 1965. Despite divorcing late in life, they remained friends throughout. She is survived by her children, Teri, Tina and Jimmy, her grandchildren Cordell and Dani, her sister Laurie, nieces Angie and Michelle, in addition to extended family and many dear friends.
Marieann spent her life in grateful service to Catholic schools and the Church, starting at Holy Cross Area School and Church, then at St. John Fisher Church until her retirement. She was known for her incredible smile and warm hugs, her delicious gnocchi and fierce dance moves. Marieann was an avid line dancer and spent many nights with her friends laughing and dancing the night away, often adorned in rhinestones or anything sparkly. She loved spending time on the Oregon coast with family and friends as well as for scrapbooking weekends. Marieann also loved to travel with international travel taking her to Italy, England, Slovenia and France.
Nothing was more important to Marieann than her two grandchildren, Cordell and Dani. She loved dearly. They were the light in her life and she loved spending time with them, swimming at the pool, making gnocchi, baking cookies, watching movies, always sharing laughs and hugs.
The funeral will be held on Saturday, November 19 at St. John Fisher Catholic Church. The Rosary will begin at 10:30 am followed by Mass at 11:00 am, and a reception afterwards. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that those who are able instead make a donation to a Catholic school of their choice or give to the Alzheimer's Association.
