Marjorie McLean Johansen, 92, of Portland, passed away peacefully on May 5, 2013 at her home surrounded by her loving family.
Mrs. Johansen was born in Portland to Raymond and Muriel Holstrom McLean on April 7, 1921. After losing her mother at an early age, Marjorie was lovingly raised by her stepmother Ruth Jefferson McLean. She graduated from Grant High School in 1938. After graduating from Oregon Teachers College in 1940, Marjorie taught in a one-room schoolhouse in Monument, Oregon. In 1941 she married John Ehrling Johansen, a Norwegian immigrant. Still teaching when she was six months pregnant, the principal asked her to resign because "the children are talking." Marjorie then focused on being a dedicated wife, mother and businesswoman.
Marjorie was a life member of Sons of Norway Greig Lodge; a member of the Scottish McLean clan; the Portland Royal Rosarians; and Lions Club of Oregon, where she helped found the first Lioness Lions Club prior to women being allowed Lion memberships. She was a Cub Scout leader for her sons and Girl Scout Leader for her daughter. As her family grew, she and her husband started a successful real estate investment business, building apartments in Portland, Salem and Eugene.
Marjorie and John traveled extensively, visiting Europe, the South Seas, Japan, China, Africa and South America. "Adventure is what we are all about" she liked to say. Marjorie loved spending time in Hawaii, where she and John maintained a residence in Honolulu since 1969.
Marjorie was dearly loved by her family and friends, and was an inspiration through her optimistic, positive outlook on life. Her sweet smile, wisdom, intelligence and compassion for others will always be remembered.
She is survived by her children Linda Hastings (Gerald), Martin, and Gary (Jill), seven grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, brother John, husband John Sr., and her beloved son John Jr.
