Marvin Leonard Johnson

January 6, 1923 — July 15, 2016

Marvin Leonard Johnson was born January 6, 1923, to Peter Axel and Hilma Swenson Johnson, the fifth of six children.   He passed away peacefully with family nearby on July 15, 2016, in Portland.  Marv’s love of family and humor will be greatly missed.

Marvin was born, graduated from high school and married Alma Wulff all in Parkrose.  He and Alma stayed there to raise their three children before moving to the Laurelhurst area.     He and Alma purchased a cabin at Twin Rocks in the 60’s and this was a much enjoyed second home for the next fifty years.

A veteran of World War II, Marv was a proud PT boater, mostly serving as a torpedo man at the Mios Woendi PT Boat Base near New Guinea.   After the war, he began a career in sporting goods at J. E. Hazeltine & Co.    His employers over the years included Ames Harris Neville Company, Boise Cascade, and Leupold and Stevens before he formed his own company as a factory representative.    He continued in the business until just before his 90th birthday.

Marv enjoyed hunting and fishing, travel, bread baking, eating good food and family events.    He belonged to the Parkrose Masonic Lodge, Harmony Lodge and the Danish Brotherhood.

Marvin is survived by daughters Christine (John) Masterson and Debra Johnson, daughter-in-law Joyce Johnson, grandchildren Cassy (Alex) Johnson-Hodge, Daniel (Jennifer) Masterson, Ryan Masterson and Erica Johnson, and great-granddaughter Marian (aka Maisie) Masterson, as well as many nieces and nephews.   He was preceded in death by his wife Alma Johnson, son Craig Johnson, brothers Kenneth, Oliver, Vernon, and Robert Johnson, and sister Dorothy Wills.

Marv’s memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, August 6, 2016, at Central Lutheran Church, 1820 NE 21st Ave., Portland, OR 97212.     In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Diabetes Association or Himmelbjerget, c/o Northwest Danish Association.
