Marvin Stinson Wyman

Marvin Stinson Wyman (or “Unk,”as his close nieces and nephews called him) left this life peacefully and headed for his Heavenly home on June 17, 2018.

Marvin was born on August 22, 1924 in Huron, South Dakota. When he was two years old, his family moved by covered wagon, to Sisseton, South Dakota where he spent his youth.

Marvin worked at many jobs as a young man, including loading hay bales onto railroad cars, but he was particularly proud of his skill as a driver. He could drive any vehicle, from farm tractors to heavy road equipment and long-haul trucks. He served his country in the army with two tours of duty. The first was as an ambulance driver with the post-WWII occupation forces in Japan. The second was with the 24th Division, 5th Regimental Combat Team assigned to L Company as a combat medic in Korea. He was discharged from the army with the rank of staff sergeant.

After his service in Korea, Marvin relocated to Portland, Oregon in 1953, and found employment with Armour Food Company where he worked for more than 36 years.

Marvin married three times. Before leaving for his tour of duty in Japan, he married Doris German in 1948. Their separation while Marvin served overseas led to divorce. After moving to Portland, he married Byrl Wagner in 1953, and they had a wonderful marriage for 48 years. Byrl passed away in 2001, and in 2005, Marvin reconnected with his first wife, Doris. They remarried and had eleven happy years together.

With an outgoing, gregarious nature, Marvin loved people and kept in contact with friends he made throughout his life. He served his church as a trustee, he served God as a Gideon for many years, and he supported overseas missions. He gave of himself unselfishly to his family, his friends, and the community. He was loved by all who knew him.

Marvin is survived by nieces Sue (Scott) Keane and Sharon Hughes, by nephews David (Marilyn) Peterson and Jeff (Joan) Ziebarth, several great nieces and nephews, along with a large extended family from North and South Dakota and Minnesota.

Marvin will be greatly missed by all who knew him. He leaves the world a better place for having been here.
