Mary Ann Lois Steffani (Johnson)

Mary Ann Lois Steffani peacefully passed away on December 22, 2024 in Vancouver, Washington. She was born on February 4, 1937 in Brockett, North Dakota to Edwin H. and Saima E. Johnson.
Mary Ann spent her early years living in North and South Dakota until moving with her family to Portland, Oregon when she was six years old. It was there where she would spend the majority of her life. In 1953 she graduated from Girls Polytechnic High School. Following high school Mary Ann attended Portland State University for her undergraduate degree. In 1964 she earned a Master’s Degree in Education from the University of Oregon and was a loyal “Duck” fan through to the very end (“Go Ducks!).
A lifelong advocate for education, Mary Ann dedicated her career to teaching middle and high school students in the Battle Ground and Vancouver School Districts until her retirement. Her passion for learning left a lasting impact on countless students over the years.
In 1966 she married the love of her life, Charles “Chuck” L. Steffani. Though she had no children of her own, she was a proud and supportive aunt and stepmother to her many nieces, nephews, stepsons and their families. For Mary Ann “family” had no boundaries. She cherished spending time with immediate and extended family and savoredthe moments to share stories both current and from long ago. At times it may not have seemedclear what journey she was taking you on but she always tied up any loose threads at the end.

She also loved traveling, bowling, golfing, and sharing stories over a sweet Rob Roy cocktail anda great piece of salmon. She was an active member of the Vancouver chapter of the American Business Women’s Association (ABWA), the Elks Lodge, and Royal Oaks Country Club for many years.
She is survived by her cousin Adrienne Gorman (Toppila), sister-in-law Lois Johnson, numerous nieces and nephews, stepsons, and her grandchildren Stephanie Germann, Amanda Long, and Jennifer Buckley. Mary Ann was predeceased by her parents; siblings Allen, Donald and Yvonne Johnson; and her beloved husband Chuck.
No funeral services are planned at this time. Internment will be with Chuck at Rose City Cemetery. In lieu of funeral services please consider making a contribution to Foundation for Vancouver Public Schools in Mary Ann’s memory.
