Mary M. Jones was born on August 12, 1917 to Laura and Edward Nichols in Alderson, Oklahoma. Because of the early death of her father, she was raised by her mother along with the help of extended family members and the church family. As a young child, she felt responsible for her younger sister Naomi and always looked after her. Her older brother Herbert looked out for both of them. She attended school in Kansas City, Kansas and graduated from Central High School.
Mary received Jesus Christ as her Savior at an early age, fell in love with Him, and continued to serve Him throughout her life. She was known for the Christian songs she would sing at home and in the church choir. The powerful prayers she prayed daily, (especially the ones her nieces and nephews witnessed) were a blessing. She knew how to call on and talk with her Savior and Lord. Her singing, praying and scripture readings will truly be missed.
After becoming an adult, Mary fell in love with and married Ollie Jones on June 26, 1939 and remained his devoted wife until his death in 1989. No children were born to this union. However, Mary and Ollie held many children near and dear to their hearts: their many nieces and nephews, and a special goddaughter Sherry Carson who passed on before her. As an Aunt, Mary was very protective of her nieces and nephews. She spent joyful times with them as they were growing up. In their lives she was known as the happy and laughable aunt that made unhappy situations reasonable and bearable. She always gave a different and Godly perspective on each one of their lives, fulfilling her role as a loving aunt and Christian. She was demanding and self-centered at times, but very observant and meeting the needs of her loved ones. She always said that Christ walked with her throughout each and every difficulty and joy.
After moving to Portland, Oregon in 1944, Mary joined Hughes Memorial Methodist Church and remained a member until her death. She was a faithful member – singing in the choir, attending Sunday school and many Methodist conventions around the country, and faithfully serving under many pastors. She truly enjoyed serving God and others. Her occupation was Central Supply Tech at Emanuel Hospital. She was a dependable employee and daily accomplished her job with pride and success. Upon her retirement after 21 years of service, she aspired to travel the world. Her Jerusalem trip to the Holy Land was the most exciting trip she ever took. She often talked about how inspirational the trip was – just being able to be where her Savior walked, talked, taught, and died was overwhelming and joyful.
Mary leaves to morn her death and to rejoice in her home going: her sister Naomi, many nieces and nephews, and friends. She has gone on to meet those who have gone before her – her mother, brother and a sister, husband, goddaughter, aunts and uncles, cousins, church members and friends. Thank God for Mary's life and the Christian legacy she carries with her and leaves behind as memories for all that knew her. She "…fought a good fight, finished the course, and kept the faith."
