Mary Lee Phillips

July 5, 1924 — October 18, 2013

Sister Mary Phillips "May" was born on July 5, 1924 in Ethel, Louisiana and was baptized at an early age at Asphodel Baptist Church, by Pastor John Henderson. She moved New Orleans and joined Stronger Hope Baptist Church pastored by T.L. Rev. Carter. Mary married James Boyd Phillips and moved to Portland where she lived for over 50 years. She joined Mt. Olivet Baptist Church pastored by the late Rev. J.J. Clow, now pastored by Pastor James Martin. Mary was an active member, she joined the choir, usher board, Deaconess as well as the sales groups. She also took piano lessons as well as sign language. She worked at White Stag as a seamstress and the Veterans Hospital as a dietitian.

Mary leaves daughter Kimbers Phillips Barber, 3 grandchildren, Davell Phillips, James Hilliard & Mary Thomas, 2 great-grandchildren, Kyler Hilliard & Davell Philips Jr., 4 sisters Ella London, Elnore Davis, Doretha Scott & Almena Major.

Mary was preceded in death by her parents: Reason Davis & Rowena Moore Davis,
Mary's Husband James Boyd Phillips, sisters: Leola Cole, Ellen Lucas, brothers: Willie Davis, Reason Davis Jr., Horace Davis, Roosevelt Davis, Edward Davis & Oscar Davis, Godsons, Vernon King, James Boyd London and a host of nieces & nephews.
Mary will be forever missed but never forgotton.

P.S. Mom was best known for the hats she wore at church, she was named the "Hat Queen". She was also famous for her cakes, pies & pecan tarts, but most of all her fabulous Gumbo!
